The majority of the funerals we conduct are what would be termed traditional, however, there are alternatives which may be more fitting for your loved one.

Traditional Funerals

Taking the deceased into our care.
We operate a 24 hour service for the convenience of our clients whereby we will collect a loved one and return them safely to our Chapel of Rest any time, day or night.

Caring for the deceased.
In addition to washing and dressing the deceased we will also ensure they are available for family & friends to pay their last respects seven days a week. Our Chapel of Rest is available during normal working hours by appointment between the hours of 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday and by appointment outside normal working hours and on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our professional services.
As experienced funeral directors we will advise and guide you through the paperwork required before a burial or cremation can take place. We will explain the process to be followed to ensure all associated legal and financial responsibilities are taken care of before the day of the funeral. We can also advise on financial assistance which may be available to the family of the deceased to help meet the funeral costs.

When arranging a funeral we will make you aware of all the choices you have. These include deciding between a cremation or a burial, the design of the coffin and whether you prefer a traditional hearse, a horse drawn carriage or a more contemporary vehicle. Many decisions may be pre-determined, however we will be on hand to provide guidance where required.

On the day of the funeral our Conductor and bearers will be in attendance to take care of you and your loved ones. We take pride in the presentation of our staff.

Our funeral vehicles are the latest prestigious fleet of Jaguar XJ hearses and limousines.

Embalming.
Our professional embalmer will strongly recommend that the deceased be embalmed if family and friends should wish to see the deceased and pay their last respects. The embalming process helps preserve the body and reduces the harshness of any effects an illness or accident may have had on the deceaseds physical appearance
Memorials & Headstones

The selection of a memorial is very personal. Our trained staff are always pleased to assist in your selection, advising you on such matters as the cemetery regulations, material selection and inscription suitability.

After a burial the final step is to arrange a memorial for your loved one.

This may range from a simple headstone to a family mausoleum. Whatever your needs or budget we can help you choose a suitable memorial and arrange the fitting of the memorial at the cemetery. We will help guide you through the paperwork required by the cemetery before the memorial can be erected

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance. A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director's services included in your plan. As our customers often tell us, that can bring peace of mind to you and your family. A plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant's fee to perform the service.

At P L Mulligan Funeral Directors, we work in partnership with Golden Charter to provide you with a simple way to plan ahead. As one of the UK's largest funeral plan providers*, Golden Charter has helped 900,000 people make funeral provisions** so we're completely confident in offering their plans to you.

Everyone has different needs when it comes to funeral planning, so we make sure the plans we offer are as flexible as possible. Horse-Drawn Funerals

A Horse-Drawn Hearse leading the Funeral Cortege is a stunning sight and provides a special goodbye to a loved one, especially if they had a love for horses. We can provide pairs of blacks or whites with matching coloured carriage. This option is certainly worthy of consideration.
Funeral Flowers

Flowers are the perfect way to express your feelings and pay respect when words simply aren't enough. But, at a time of loss, it can be difficult to know which flowers and style to choose.

The link below shows you a section of what we have available in our sympathy collection.

Repatriations

If the person died in the United Kingdom but is to be buried or cremated abroad then the deceaseds body can be repatriated to the country of their nationality/birth. We offer an extensive repatriation service for all nationalities to all destinations throughout the world.

Likewise if a loved one has died whilst abroad we can arrange for their repatriation back to the United Kingdom where the funeral can be conducted.

Our full service includes transportation of the Deceased, the choice of coffin or casket and completion of all of the necessary paperwork.

Further details for all of the above services can be obtained by calling or visiting our office between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday or by appointment on Saturday.

Outside our office hours please contact one of our 24hr contact numbers.
Cremations and Burials

Cremations are the most common form of funerals with around eight in ten of all funerals being carried out in this way in the UK. The cost of a cremation is generally less than a burial especially where a grave is to be purchased.

Although burials are now fewer in number they are still the choice of many, where a preference is shown to having a grave to visit to pay respect to the loved one they have lost.

There are many crematoriums and cemetery's located near to our funeral homes serving our customers all with their own specific charges and working arrangements. When arranging a funeral our staff will be able to help you make an informed decision when choosing the venue for the funeral.
Advice on DWP

The DWP award is considered on the next of kins personal circumstances where the deceased has passed away without leaving sufficient funds to pay for their own funeral.

Depending on your personal circumstances you may be eligible to apply for a Funeral Payment from the Social Fund which is a responsibility of the Department for Works and Pensions.

When discussing the funeral, our staff can help with advice on eligibility and how to make a claim to the Social Fund.
Funeral Finance

If a loved one dies suddenly or unexpectedly it can leave a financial burden on their family. To help Families who find themselves in these circumstances we have facilitated an arrangement with Funeral Safe who are Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority to make loans for the purpose of funeral related expenses.

All or part of the costs can be borrowed over a period of between 12 - 36 months. All loan agreements are subject to status and terms and conditions as set out in the financial conduct authority and credit consumer association guidelines. Loan agreements are only valid once permission has been granted via signature or e-signature.

Our staff will be happy to discuss a loan with you and help you with an application to Funeral Safe.
Coroner Services

P L Mulligan Family Funeral Directors' work with the Coroner for the London Borough of Bexley and assist with taking the person who has died into the Coroners' care under the instruction of the Coroner's Office.

If a loved one has died and been taken into the Coroner's care then a Coroners' Officer will contact you, as the next of kin, usually within a few days to discuss the circumstances of your loved one’s death and will let you know when it will be possible to register the death and when funeral arrangements can be made.

If we can be of assistance in providing information and advice regarding funeral arrangements, then please contact us. Below is a link to our PLM Coroners brief guide and the HM Government Guide to the Coroner Services which we hope you will find useful.
